Problem

Travel booking experiences are often fragmented across multiple platforms: flights on one app, trains on another, accommodations elsewhere. Users are forced to compare prices manually, switch between services, and manage bookings in disconnected environments.

Halyk Travel aimed to consolidate transportation and travel-related services into a single, intuitive mobile experience. The challenge was to design a scalable, easy-to-navigate app that supports flights, trains, cars, price alerts, and lifestyle travel content while maintaining clarity and performance.

Goals

  • Create a unified travel booking experience
  • Simplify search and purchase flows for flights and trains
  • Enable real-time price monitoring
  • Support additional travel services (cars, stays, budgets)
  • Balance functional flows with inspirational content
  • Build a scalable and flexible design system

Research and insights

Research focused on understanding how users plan trips, compare prices, and manage bookings across devices.

1.

Users frequently compare options before purchase.

2.

Price sensitivity is high and alerts are critical.

3.

Booking flows must be fast and transparent.

4.

Travel inspiration (stories, visuals) increases engagement.

5.

Trust and clarity are critical in payment and confirmation stages.

Usability Studies

1.

Flight & Train Booking Flow

This study focused on ensuring that booking flights and trains is intuitive and fast. The results showed that clear sorting options and well-structured filter grouping significantly improved decision-making speed. A simplified checkout flow reduced the risk of drop-off, while a strong visual price hierarchy enhanced transparency and helped users feel more confident about their choices.

2.

Price Alert

The objective of this study was to validate the clarity and usefulness of the price alert system. Toggle-based alerts improved overall usability, and clear visual state changes made it easier for users to understand when alerts were active. Users particularly appreciated the ability to monitor prices passively, which reduced the need for repeated manual searches.

3.

Multi-Service Navigation

This study evaluated clarity across multiple services, including flights, trains, cars, and other offerings. Icon-based categorization improved recognition and helped users quickly identify the service they needed. Clear segmentation between services reduced confusion, and users valued having a unified booking history that consolidated their activity in one place.

4.

Content vs Utility Balance

The goal of this study was to ensure that inspirational content did not interfere with booking flows. Separating “stories” from transactional screens improved user focus and reduced cognitive load. Users engaged more with discovery content when it felt optional rather than embedded directly within functional booking processes.
